HKUST Arts Festival 2019 – ART AND CRISIS

The plastic crisis is recognized as one of the greatest challenges to the world. How would artists express their concern?

Visual artist Michelle Fung has been working on this theme for a few years and developed visual projects, creative writing and book illustrations on it. Imagine one day, we have to feed ourselves on plastic, what will the world or life be like? Michelle’s fantasy and artworks can be seen in “Plastic, plastic, every where!” exhibition during AF2019.

The documentary is a favorite art form to deal with crises. A recent production, A Plastic Ocean, has shocked viewers all over the world with the alarming state of affairs. The Center for the Arts is screening it with a panel discussion afterwards. The panelists will share with you tips to lead a plastic-free life and the cutting edge technology to recycle plastic.

In April, Italian designer and artist Manuela Catania will conduct a Plastic Fashion Workshop for us. She has been exploring ways to use old textile and plastic to hand-make wearable fashion pieces. To prepare for the workshop, we’re already working with the Sustainable Unit to collect used, clean plastic on campus. Help us turn waste into useful materials and join us to learn fashion design and making skills!

We hope to see you in our events.

HKUST Arts Festival 2018 - April and May events

To welcome you all back to campus after the term break, the Center for the Arts has arranged more AF2018 events in the coming weeks.

The Dance Society will fill the campus with a lot of fun with their heavy beats and energetic pulses right next Monday. Winty Wan and Gilbert Sak will return to give a classical concert featuring European composers of the 18th century. The artists-in-residence, L’Artiste, will run their last demonstration workshop on Baroque music and complete their program with a celebration concert with all the past workshop participants on two consecutive Thursdays.

Highly recommended to you is the closing event of AF2018, a Sheng and Piano Duo Recital, which symbolizes a wonderful clash of the East and the West and continues the rich cultural exchanges taken place along the Silk Road centuries ago.

Two events will help you explore your creative and inventive impulse: a Calligraphy Workshop to be co-organized with the Library and a visit to HKDI to check out the cutting edge Red Dot Award-winning technology products from the renowned Red Dot Design Museum on display there. Registration is necessary and places are limited for these events!

Our spring program will conclude with the annual performance by the Staff Choir in May. In order to give their best performance, members are working hard on their skills and most importantly, they enjoy singing.

We are grateful to everybody who has contributed or will contribute to our spring program.

HKUST Arts Festival 2018 - The Art and Culture Along the Silk Road

AF2018_key+image+to+Lib_1.jpg

Almost 40 years ago, the first documentary series about the Silk Road was released by NHK and was an immediate success. It opened up China to the world and astonished visitors with the beautiful sceneries and multitude of goods, cultures and religions exchanged on this network of trade routes. The Center for the Arts is presenting The Art and Culture Along the Silk Road in AF2018 with a grand exhibition and a series of talks to refresh our memory of the once vigorous art and cultural scene to the west of Chang’an (Xi’an).

Italian journalist Gabriella Bonino will give a contemporary account of her journeys along the Silk Road, comparing it with those made by her compatriot Marco Polo over seven centuries ago. The local writer Cheung Shin Yee will enlighten us with the history of the development of the Maritime Silk Road by the great explorer Zheng He. Writer and reporter Mishi Saran will share with us her experience of exploring Central Asia beyond the “Western Regions” in her journeys in which she traced Xuanzang’s path all the way to India. Finally, art historian Yuka Kadoi will talk about the artistic interaction between China and Iran under the Mongols and how it led to a new style of Islamic art.

The NHK documentary series enchanted its audience with not only striking sceneries, but also heavenly music composed by Kitaro. We are glad that the University Philharmonic Orchestra will perform for AF2018 Music from the World, with a new arrangement of Kitaro’s Caravansary by their conductor Dr Ken Cheng.

Stayed tuned, more will come in April…
